The marquise is the name given to the diamond shape that is long and pointed at both ends, so when viewed straight down from above it looks something like a football (to some gentlemen) or like closed lips (to some ladies). Another popular name for Marquise is Navette Cut diamond. Marquise diamond rings are often synonymous with Oval shaped diamonds due to the fact that Marquise is also a variation of Round Brilliant Diamond. However, in order to create a Marquise, the diamond artist will usually work more and only expert cutters know how to cut it, due to the fragile sharp points that can be easily damaged during the process of placing facets. Fortunately for Marquise enthusiasts, despite the labor intensive process, Marquise diamond rings still cost less than your typical Rounds. Like Ovals, Marquise diamond rings are preferred by customers that are looking for a diamond rings which are distinctive in their appearance.
Marquise has a very interesting background concerning its invention. It is believed that the name Marquise came from a legend of the Marquise of Pompadour. Sun King wanted a diamond to resemble the shape of the mouth of the Marquise. Another popular name for Marquise is Navette Cut diamond.
The ideal Marquise diamond ring contains 56 facets, and the ideal ratio of length to width should be 2:1 ratio. “Bow tie effect” should be also considered when buying Marquise diamonds. This effect could be easily avoided by choosing the right depth, that should stay within the lower 60% parameter.
