The Anatomy of a GIA Certificate

1. Report No. This is the report number which is entered into GIA computer and micro-filming system for permanent record.

2. Shape & Cut Each diamond is described as to its shape (round, pear, oval, etc.) and its cut (brilliant, step, mixed, etc.)

3. Measurements Each diamond is measured with a millimeter micrometer to the hundredth of a millimeter.

4. Weight Each diamond is weighted on an extremely accurate electronic digital balance with results reported to the nearest hundredth of a carat.

5. Proportions Proportions describe the ratio of the major physical features of a diamond.

6. Finish Finish describes the clarity of polish and symmetry of facet placement.

7. Clarity Clarity describes the summation of the number, size, placement and the nature of inclusions and or surface irregularities.

8. Color Color grade represents the range in which this diamond is positioned between GIA master color comparison stones.

9. Fluorescence Fluorescence (when present) describes the degree of sensitivity of a diamond to long-wave ultraviolet radiation such as is present in daylight.

10. Comments Comments are used to describe characteristics not covered by the above entries or on the plotting diagram. For example, "minor details of polish are not shown."

11. Plotting Diagram This is a diagram of similar shape and cut to the diamond noting nature and position of its identifying characteristics.

12. Key to Symbols Internal (inclusions) and external (blemishes) identifying characteristics are plotted in the relative relationship of size and position to the diagram as they are to the diamond. This serves as an illustration of the clarity grade but more importantly as a basis for the future identification of this diamond.

13. Signature Each report contains the GIA GTL company signature to reflect the work of the many staff members responsible for each report.

14. Grading Scale The relative position of the grade range of each diamond is shown with respect to GIA's complete grading system.

15. Not a guarantee valuation or appraisal. GIA doesn't buy. GIA doesn't sell. GIA doesn't appraise. GIA only grades diamonds with integrity and objectivity.
